If you're looking for a challenging yet rewarding climb, then look no further than Mt Torlesse. Located in the Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park in Canterbury, this mountain offers stunning views of the Southern Alps and the Canterbury Plains.
The track starts with a 1.5 hour walk up the Kowai River before reaching the base of the mountain. The Kowai River walk is an excellent opportunity to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery before the climb. Once you reach the start of the climb, the real challenge begins. The climb is steep and requires careful navigation up mixed scree, which is made up of loose rocks and stones.
Once we cleared the scrub section, we entered into mixed scree territory. This part of the climb required more focus as we had to carefully pick our footing over rocky terrain that could shift beneath us at any moment.
Finally, after about 2.5-hours of climbing, we reached the top! And what a view it was! Looking out across 360 degrees towards Arthur's Pass and beyond to Canterbury Plains below left me breathless (both figuratively and literally).
The view from the top of Mt Torlesse is truly breathtaking. It's a reminder of how small we are in comparison to the vastness of nature, yet also a testament to our ability to conquer challenges and push ourselves beyond what we thought was possible.
