When time is short and the weather is stunning, there is nothing better than doing the Lake Clearwater Circuit.
From Ashburton it takes about one hour to drive to the Ashburton Lakes, where you will find Lake Camp and Lake Clearwater. Both lakes offer impressive views of the Hakatere Conservation Park and the many peaks beyond.
Accessing this track is straight forward, from the main road, turn right and head through the huts towards the lake, the parking area is to the right.
From the parking area the track is well sign posted and marked, with the majority of the track following an old 4WD track around the lake. Along the way you will pass the track to Mt Guy, the track to Mystery Lake and eventually Te Araroa Trail that cuts across this area destined for the Potts River.
This is not a strenuous track, and it is nice to take the time to appreciate your surrounds and soak in the views.
Once you reach the bottom end of the lake the 4WD track ends and there is a fence to cross, from here the track narrows towards the lakes outlet where a bridge a short boardwalk section are a pleasant distraction. On the other side of the lake the track meanders under lakeside trees until it reaches the lakeside camp ground and huts.
The circuit will take approximately 3 hours to complete depending on how many photo and snack stops you choose to take.
