Lake Wombat

Updated: Jan 17

Queens Birthday weekend this year saw us venture over to the West Coast for a few days, unfortunately the weather wasn't as perfect as it was at the same time last year, but even in wet weather the West Coast is a magical place to be.

We decided to do the easy and short Lake Wombat walk which is just out of Franz Josef township on the way to the glacier car park. The car park was virtually empty which meant we would just about have the entire track to ourselves.

From the car park the track wanders gently through West Coast rainforest before beginning to climb up the moraine wall towards the lake. It is a steady climb all the way and in parts the track zig zags to make it more friendly.

Cresting the steepest section the track levels out and becomes more undulating, the turn off for the Alex Knob track is passed shortly before a brief descent down to Lake Wombat.

The lake itself is in a magical spot, it's hard to remember that it is well above the river below, and in this weather it was a raging torrent. On a fine day this would be a great place to linger and soak in the peaceful surrounds.

The return journey is easier as it is virtually all down hill. This is a great track to do, taking us just over two hours to complete.
