Lower Salmon Creek Biv

Updated: Jan 17

Lower Salmon Creek Biv is a nice side trip from Black Hill Hut, something I completed while doing the Wharfedale Hut and Black Hill Hut circuit.

From Black Hill Hut, it is a very steep 800 metre descent down a spur to Salmon Creek. From the hut the track initially climbs about 100 metres to the summit of Black Hill, then the descent starts. First following the open tussock and rock tops above the bushline. Once the bushline is reached the hard work begins.

There was a bit of windfall to negotiate but the track was very easy to follow, with care taken over the steepest sections.

It took just over 2 hours to reach the biv, made easier by the fact we were only carrying light day packs.

The biv itself sits in a clearing about Salmon Creek, there is a long drop toilet nearby and water is sourced from the creek itself.

On a hot summer day there are endless summing holes and it's possible to head further upstream to the site where Upper Salmon Creek Biv once stood.

The biv doesn't get many visitors as the hut book dates back to the 1970's. It seems like a comfortable spot for a night, with 2 bunks and a cooking bench. From what I read in the hut book the creek is good for fishing.

After a decent break it was time to tackle the track and return to Black Hill Hut for the night, the track was just as steep going up as it was coming down and it didn't take any longer to get back to the top.
