Mt Lyndon Circuit

If you're looking for a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience, look no further than the Mt. Lyndon circuit.

This stunning trail offers the chance to soak in some of the most breathtaking views of Lake Lyndon and the surrounding mountains.

The hike starts from Lake Lyndon Lodge at the southern end of the lake and takes you up to the peak of Mt. Lyndon 1489 metres before descending along the ridge to the northern end of the lake, and then walking along the side of the lake back to the lodge.

The journey begins with a steady climb initially following mountain bike trails and patches of alpine scrub, with views of the picturesque Lake Lyndon below. As you ascend, the gradient reduces revealing stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains from Mt Rolleston in Arthurs Pass to the nearer Foggy and Castle Hill peaks.

Once you reach the peak of Mt. Lyndon, you'll be rewarded with 360-degree views of the Southern Alps and the Canterbury Plains. The sense of tranquility and the awe-inspiring natural beauty make the initial climb a truly memorable experience.

As you make your way down the ridge towards the northern end of the lake, the terrain returns to alpine scrub from barren shingle, creating an interesting and varied hiking experience. The rugged and raw beauty of the landscape will keep you engaged as you continue down to the lake edge.

It's important to note that Lake Lyndon can often be busy with jet skis and powerboats, particularly during the summer months. The sound of engines and the sight of water sports enthusiasts can be a stark contrast to the serene beauty of the hike. However, as you ascend to higher elevations and head along the ridge, the sounds of the lake activities will gradually fade into the distance, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the peaceful serenity of the natural surroundings.

Reaching the northern end of the lake, the terrain becomes more level and you'll have the opportunity to rest and take in the serene beauty of Lake Lyndon. The final stretch of the hike takes you along the side of the lake.

Overall, the Mt. Lyndon circuit offers hikers a diverse and challenging experience, with incredible views and a sense of accomplishment. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a new adventure, this trail is sure to leave you with lasting memories of the stunning natural beauty of New Zealand's South Island. So, lace up your hiking boots and hit the trail for an unforgettable experience at Mt. Lyndon, where the contrast of natural beauty and human activities creates a unique and unforgettable adventure.
