Oteake 4WD Adventure

Updated: Feb 22

Entering Oteake Conservation Area from St Bathans end

Oteake Conservation Area is a vast, rugged, mountainous wilderness area in the central South Island of New Zealand that covers over 64,000 hectares. The land is vast and remote, offering some of the most incredible scenery you can find in New Zealand. A 4WD adventure drive through Oteake Conservation Area is the perfect way to explore the vast landscapes, take in the stunning views, and learn more about the history and culture of the area.

To start a 4WD adventure in Oteake Conservation Area, you'll need to begin at the Homestead Campsite, which is located on the northern edge of the conservation area. You can camp overnight at the campsite, which has toilets and barbeque facilities, and it also serves as the perfect starting point for the adventure drive.

The drive begins by following the Manuherikia River for 37km, taking you through rugged and stunning landscapes. The route crosses rivers, tracks through tussocks, and provides unforgettable scenic views as you travel through the conservation area. A camera is a must-have item for this journey.

Along the way, two huts offer rest and camping spots for explorers. The first hut you'll come across is Boundary Creek Hut, which provides an excellent location if you need to rest or spend the night. This backcountry hut has six bunks and a fire. You can find local flora and fauna inside and out of the hut, and nearby there are some good places to fish in the river.

If you want to travel deeper into the heart of the conservation area, Top Hut offers a perfect spot to spend the night. But be prepared for an adventurous journey to reach the hut - the road gets rough, and the river crossings can be challenging when the river is high. Top Hut offers six bunks, and you must carry your own water and fuel.

The last section of the drive takes you over Omarama Saddle, an iconic part of the journey. The saddle is at an elevation of 1273 meters, and the road can be challenging as it is steep with tight switchbacks. At this height, the view of the surrounding conservation area is stunning. The road eventually descends dramatically and finishes at Omarama where, if you have time or the energy, you can enjoy the town's hot pools or just keep driving and explore more parts of North Otago.

Overall, the 4WD adventure drive through Oteake Conservation Area is an awe-inspiring journey that takes exploration and adventure to a new level. You should always prepare for your journey by checking the weather forecast and making sure you have all the equipment and provisions you need. Make sure to leave no trace and respect the conservation area as you explore the magnificent landscape.
