Located in New Zealand's stunning Southern Alps, the Rees-Dart track is a popular hiking route that takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. This multi-day trek is suitable for hikers of all levels, from beginners to experienced hikers.

The track begins at the Muddy Creek car park, and on this particular trek, hikers spend three to four nights on the trail before finishing at Chinamans car park.

Day 1

After arriving at Muddy Creek car park, the track begins with a steady climb through beech forest before emerging into the open valley. The views of the mountains and the river below are breathtaking. The Rees River flows through the valley, and the stunning river vista will accompany hikers for the first few hours of the trail.

The track continues through a mix of grasslands and beech forest, offering plenty of opportunities to view the unique flora and fauna of the region. After a few hours, the route reaches a high point with an amazing view of the valley on both sides. From here, the route descends to the first hut, Shelter Rock, which is situated in a glacial valley. There is a great stream nearby which makes for an ideal swimming spot on a hot day.

Day 2

The second day includes a steep uphill climb towards the Rees Saddle. The marks the highest point of the track at 1471 metres. The climb is challenging but worth the effort. From the top, the views of the mountains are spectacular, and you can see Mt Aspiring towering in the distance.

The descent down from the saddle is challenging as the route includes narrow a pathway that winds through a steep cliff face. However, the scenery is stunning, and once again, hikers can enjoy great views of the Dart River below. The track continues through beautiful mountain scrub and tussock before reaching Dart Hut. This hut is located on the banks of the Dart River, which offers a great opportunity for a refreshing swim.

Day 3

The third day of the track includes a beautiful walk along the Dart River. The route passes through beautiful beech forest and meandering rivers.

After enjoying the beautiful scenery, the trail continues towards the final hut, Daleys Flat.

Day 4

The final day begins with a walk through forest before heading towards Sandy Bluff and Chinamans car park. This section of the track offers stunning views of the Beans Burn Valley and the surrounding mountains.

The track ends at Chinamans car park, and your trip back to either Glenorchy or Queenstown. The hike ends with a sense of achievement and satisfaction, having covered one of the most spectacular trails in all of New Zealand.

Overall, the Rees-Dart Track is an incredibly scenic and exhilarating hike through stunning landscapes. The track requires good fitness levels and some hiking experience, but the rewards of the journey are definitely worth the effort. This is an unforgettable journey through some of New Zealand's most impressive natural landscapes, and for many hikers, it is a bucket-list destination.
